Моргана

The celebrated first edition of Vladimir Nabokov's monumental English translation and commentary on Alexander Pushkin's "Eugene Onegin". Nabokov deliberately abandoned the traditional attempt to reproduce Pushkin's rhymes in English and instead created an exceptionally literal translation intended to convey the precise meaning of the Russian original. The first volume contains Nabokov's extensive introduction and complete translation. Volumes two and three comprise his extraordinarily detailed commentary on Pushkin's language, literary sources, historical background, geography, prosody and textual variants. The fourth volume contains the index and a facsimile reproduction of the 1837 Russian edition, the last edition published during Pushkin's lifetime. The complete four-volume set comprises approximately 1,915 pages and is one of Nabokov's most important scholarly achievements. Boston University

Condition: Good, complete condition. All four original volumes and the publisher's original slipcase are present. The cream dust jackets show age toning, rubbing and wear along the edges and spine ends. The grey publisher's slipcase is considerably age-darkened and stained, with rubbing, edge wear and damage to the upper opening; the original printed title label is present and bears an old handwritten price notation. The volumes themselves appear substantially better preserved than the slipcase. Bindings remain intact.
